Dear Sunflower Growing in the Laundromat,

     Sunflower

Everybody's looking at you
They can see you're a sunflower opening up
Stuck with a glorious headwound
You're a sunflower forcing itself open
The way an evil parent declares war on a child's closed fist
That furious but kinder
Your bloom funnily cavalier
Inside the filthy laundromat of poetry
Where it's always 3 a.m.
Squalid ominous scary
That laundromat is Rapesville

     Sunflower

You are Sunflower
Hear you unfurl and roar
You are invincible
Without even a pot to piss or grow in
Finally rooted in the earth herself
You have found under the terrible laundromat floor
You know the laundromat
It's where you pretend to read to ignore the less fortunate
It is what our parents taught us to do
But you aren't doing this
It's funny
But what's a nice sunflower like you doing here
In the middle of the laundromat of doom

     Sunflower

We begin to exclaim to one another
Look at this Sunflower
It's so creepy we giggle
In the dark night of the laundromat
Watching your head turn
To have a sunflower come to visit and anchor
So unironically in the earth!
You are unfurling petals and lovers
You are sweetly very many very many sweetly
Seed mazed
A sunflower has sprung up unbidden
Oh, who's bidding anyway
I never wanted to be bade to do anything
Who does
Chumps from Chumpsville
Loser sunflowers

     Sunflower

I wonder
That the sunflower has manners and wiles
That the sunflower can speak
To the less fortunate in the laundromat
You say you are shelter
You say you are shelter but that's crazy talk
You are insane
There's no doubt of that
Sunflower off the deep end
Sunflower off the hook
Sunflower a few bees short of a colony

     Sunflower

You are clearly insane
You are cleverly florally insane
You are certifiable
You are certifiably floral
You are certifiably in bloom
Where are you going
You great big sunflower you
But
How can anyone take shelter under you
How can anyone live under a sunflower
You really are thinking through the explosion of your head
Which is sorta sweet
But how can anyone live rent-free under a sunflower
As you invite us to do
You are insane
Dutifully and bountifully insane

     Sunflower

Few who approach you are sparrows
Though some will try for that effect
Almost anyone can thrum
But you have found the Sun
And you turn your head and follow it
The way a dog follows ice cream
And even if someone tried to arrest you
How would they possibly fingerprint you
Like all the clever sunflowers who have gone before you
You've erased your fingeprints
There are only seeds and that liony fringe
Around your head like a kid in a pageant
All we can do is stand and scream at you
In the dark school pageant of the soul
Egging you on like horrible parents
Who you tell the asparagus you don't really know
