Whitney Houston Died Tonight

How fucking sad is that?

Forty-eight years old.

Doesn't that feel like a shiv in the heart?

I was just thinking the other weekend--when Kristin Chenowith (a great vocalist) struggled through the National Anthem--how far Whitney Houston's version soared over any other contemporary singer's that I could remember.

I'm sure the comparisons to Billie Holiday (talent and tragedy both) will be flying into the press.

  1. Ahh, sad. She was a major pop music figure in the decade I came of age (the 80s), though I tend to associate her most with her Fairy Godmother in "Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella" (which is really sweet in spite of the nasty reviews--WH and Brandy were both wonderful).

  2. I didn't even know she did that. I'm guessing I probably missed out on a lot of her less-publicized things. And I'm generally into the more--hate to use the lame "alternative" rubric, but you know what I mean, I bet. But I will stop the dial flipping and listen to a voice like hers. I grew up with her as a household presence in the 80s too. My Mom loved her. My tiny niece and her friends loved singing her songs. She had that sort of voice that can cut across generations. Of course, now I have her signature tune in my head. I know Dionne is her auntie and I guess her Mom is what, gospel? I don't know her mom's music. Her death seems to have really hit other celebs and singers hard. I'm sure tons of today's famous singers grew up idolizing her. And I'm sure it scared the hell out of many other addicts--not that I know addiction had anything to do with her death. But people have to be thinking that way. I mean of her past use. Her heart or other vital organs could have been permanently damaged by her "heavy use" years. I hope it was quick and painless anyway. I'm guessing Idol will do some sort of tribute episode next week or soon...and E! and a bazillion other networks around the world. I think I think like certain African cultures do: death is unnatural. So when it happens, somebody must have used bad mojo on someone. I'm half joking, but half not. Maybe nature just wires us to think we're immortal to keep us interested in the game.
